Peavy House Rendering

Peavy House Rendering

Another magnificent house from a talented designer. Modern homes are not my thing, I am more of a traditional guy, but after seeing the Peavy House Rendering, I can like the modern home. The pool design is insane!

Underhill Road Renderings

Underhill Road Renderings

Welcome to the virtual Underhill development. There are a series of eleven homes and for each home, there is an elevation and perspective. The project also included a few “hero” shots, which I think help tell the story. When I am initially contacted by a potential client, I send out a questionnaire, which asks questions so i can help tell the story. Project budgets are important, but telling the story is also important. I think “hero” shots are a great way to tell that story in a way an overall image just can’t do. I mean, would you really know that there is a lower level entrance if you did not have the ‘hero’ shot of a man walking down the stairs? Would you know the porches were designed on each house to be part of the community, or would you know it was a family community without seeing kids playing?

I employed a few new techniques on these (always looking for ways to improve). if you notice, there are things in every window. It is very subtle, but gives the windows depth. Also, I warped the glass, to give it more interest, with a subtle boost of blue in the window tint.

Another grand project from a blue chip client.

Cute little house. I have always wanted a metal roof; maybe this is the one! What more can you ask for? Metal roof, wrap-around porch, white board and batten; checks all the boxes.

When this referral client reached out to me about this house, I got excited. I am a huge fan of architecture, and a house like this gets my blood flowing.

I request AutoCAD files, since I prefer starting with those, but sometimes those are not available. Here, they were not, and I received a SketchUp model. There are obstacles starting with people’s model that I have mentioned before, and this one was a booger. I spent about twice the time cleaning up flipped normals, double geometry, and all other kinds of bad geometry than modeling from CAD files. I am a pretty calm person, and it takes a lot to get me mad. I can’t tell you how many times I yelled to myself that I’ll never take someone’s model ever again! This wasn’t my clients’ model, it was the architects.

I think these turned out wonderfully, and I hope you agree; my client did!

FANTASTIC WORK! Thank you Bobby

Caccavo Rendering

Caccavo Rendering

Often I get clients wanting to send me either a Revit model or a SketchUp model, and they assume the process can be fast-tracked with the 3D model being provided. Revit and SketchUp software are great for what they are, but for me, they both propose issues. The Revit model and the SketchUp have double faces and flipped normals, which are detrimental to me. Double faces are elements occupying the same space, like walls on top of walls; flipped normals are when the geometry points the wrong way. Rendering software tries to optimize and only sees the element toward the normal; when flipped, the software can’t see it correctly. So, if you draw a wall in Revit or Sketchup counterclockwise, the normals will face in when you need it facing out unless it is an interior wall. Revit and SketchUp don’t care, but rendering engines do.

Revit models have a ton of unneeded information, and the Revit model is often part 3D and part 2D (drafted with 2D lines), making it challenging to understand.

SketchUp has a low learning curve, so very little training is needed. However, minimal training means the model is usually sloppy. Again, for its purpose, SketchUp is great; for quick design intent models.

The Caccavo model came to me as a SketchUp model. Regarding this SketchUp model, it was modeled well. Still, it took me about a day to fix the flipped normals, delete the double geometry, and replace low-resolution geometry with high-resolution geometry. If I had started with a 2D drawing, it would have taken me about the same time.

What a great-looking house! I have said many times I love brick! White brick and black windows are my new favorite.

Brick is my favorite building material. I am from Chicago, and many structures are brick (Chicago Fire). When they tear down an old factory or something, those bricks are recycled and valuable for future construction. Brick means the structure will last forever. It takes a skilled blue-collar mason, the type of skills who built this country.

Bentley Pool House Rendering

Pools, what to say about pools? First, if you are going to have a pool, I hope they set you up with a nicely designed pool house like the Bentley Pool House.

I live in a resort community, with several pools, and you hardly see the pool being used. Personally, I haven’t used them. Growing up my parents installed a huge above ground pool, but nobody had the time to take care of it, so it didn’t last long. I guess pools are a luxury most people want, but once you have access to one, the novelty wears off.

What do you think? Pool or no pool?

Great looking house! I love the stone, metal roof, and nearly everything about this home render. The brief was a Texas house, so I wanted to make it look a little like it was on a ranch.

Here is a Compass rendering out of LA (Los Angeles). The home is almost done, but they wanted to get it listed before they could take photos. They wanted the house to look large, so I lowered the camera (photographer’s trick). The premise is you are looking higher than average, making the brain interpret what you are looking at as more significant than it is.
