Sky Ranch - Lake Ascent

I was approached by a marketing coordinator, who was hired to market these house plans. The marketing coordinator crawled the web for a while looking for someone who could nail some architectural illustrations for him. Now, as you know, there are thousands of architectural illustrators on the web and to be hired amongst all the other talented artist is always an honor.

The initial sales push used some watercolors and were successful. The company was making a profit and they wanted to up their game with my photorealistic renders. I hope that they see a great increase in revenue because of my work.

Sky Ranch - Sky Ascent

I really like this house. Not only is it out in the woods, but I love the contrasting wood colors. The twilight shot was a challenge, but hopefully, I pulled it off. I have successfully done twilight renderings many times in the past, but for some reason, this one presented a challenge.

Florida House Rendering

Oh, someday Spring will show up here, in the North Woods of Minnesota. Until then, I can live vicariously through these Florida architectural renderings.

Arroyo House Rendering

Each project is unique and has a life of their own; as always, the possibilities are endless.  There really isn't a recipe for success and what works for one image doesn't guarantee the success for another. The Arroyo house rendering was an example of what worked for the last image didn't work for this one, however, after spending a day tweaking light and shadow, I think it turned out great.

Union 6 Architectural Renderings

What a neat house, I'll take it! Hopefully, at least that was my goal, the perspective family feels the same when they see these architectural renderings. These renderings were created to sell a property that is currently under extensive remodeling.

Montgomery Ward Building Rendering

What can I say, what a cool opportunity? About a month ago I was asked to recreate the Montgomery Ward Building, in Chicago Illinois, to be used on the lobby walls. The building has gone through many changes over the years and it is now luxury condominiums. There are only known low-resolution photos, so it was my job to virtually recreate the building from these low-resolution photos.

The Carolyn Home Rendering

White siding in a daylight scene is always a challenge. To get this to work I have to make my material pretty dark; I think you would be surprised.  White, in RGB, is 255, 255, 255, however, white here is 140, 140, 140, which is a little brighter than a neutral gray.  I like to have a nice balance of light and shadow, so to keep the darks from being too dark and the lights being too light is a balancing act. I think I pulled it off!

Garden Cottage Renderings

Upper Minnesota is where I call home, however, 99% of my work comes from every other place on the globe, except my home state.  However, a local resort contacted me in regards to some marketing material they needed for a new development that they are working on.

Here, are the images to this set. My goal was to create images that told a story, a story of a garden house in the woods.

Tamarac Village

Tamarac Village is a development in Florida. I worked on this project early last year, however, at the time it was in preliminary, and I didn't have any drawings, which made things difficult. This time, I had drawings, which made things easier, but the project was still massive and had its challenges.

First, were the many building and the short deadline along with the intricate site plan. There are paths, pavers, asphalt, concrete, and a lot of asphalt markings. Initially, I had three weeks to build the buildings and the site with the basic landscape. After that deadline was met, I had another week to complete the landscape plan. The landscape plan was nothing less than insane. All-in-all, there were over 50 plants, trees, and ground cover species placed in intricate patterns everywhere (tens of thousands).

The owner had specific views he wanted, which were not necessarily what I would have chosen. I spend a lot of time composing a scene and setting up the light, but on these, the views were picked for the owners specific needs.

Jackson & Whittaker House Renderings

Out of all my work, these single family homes are my favorite. I like them because they are large enough to be challenging, but not too large for the software to get weighed down. The beauty is in the detail and detail is what makes these 3D models heavy and difficult to work with. There are a lot of cheats and corners most cut, but that's not me. I do things that I know will make a model difficult to work with, however, the quality is worth the pain.

Child Playset Renderings

How fun, playset renderings!  I have done many of these renderings over the years and they are always a nice break from some of the mammoth house renderings I work on. These were rendered with each material masked into their own layer on a transparent background. The owner has a photographer who will superimpose these over a photo and the playsets without swings, where swings should be, will paste photos of children swinging.

The play set renderings were rendered on a plane, which allows me to render shadows on a transparent background, so when the playset rendering is superimposed on the photo, the shadow will be there, too.

Sanctuary Residence Spring Renderings

A couple months ago I was asked to do some Fall renderings, which I did and they turned out great! Last week I was asked to create some Spring renderings for the same project. Here they are.

ARCX Light Fixture Product Renderings

If you have followed me for any amount of time you know that I do mainly architectural renderings. Actually, I have been creating architectural renderings for about 25 years, however, I do occasionally wander outside of my wheelhouse and do other things. Here, I was asked to illustrate some really cool lighting fixtures called ARCX lights. These product renderings will be used in brochures to market their product. They are really a cool idea. The lights come in sections and can be assembled in almost any configuration that you can imagine.

Bear Park House Renderings

What a great project from a great Canadian client. These renderings, like all of my renderings, is an exercise in patience.  Although my workflow doesn't change, each project seems to have its own personality. Some are easy going and some are very temperamental; this one was easy going. From displacement to high-quality bushes and trees, too high-quality cars, depth of field, and environmental fog.  Even though the architectural rendering has all the bells and whistles, the scene was stable and rendered relatively quickly.

Home2 - Joplin Mo Rendering

During the early 90's I worked as an illustrator for a hotel/motel design/build architectural firm. This, Home2 rendering, is for Joplin, Mo where I traveled for my early 90's position.  It was a pleasure to render this building and it brough back some good memories.

The stars were aligned for this architectural rendering. Although I added a lot of information, rendering times were great; at 4K these stills rendered out in 1/2 per still.

The Capri Interior Renderings

Over the past years, I have created 100's of exterior architectural renderings and this year alone, I am closing in on that number with my interior architectural renderings. Like my exterior renderings, interior renderings take a special skill and attention to detail. Technically, interiors are a pain to render, especially since most American homes have small window openings.  Getting all the natural light into the small opening is a computer nightmare. I compensate with artificial light, but the natural light looks so much nicer and with the right HDRI, the colors are nice a subtle.
