Caccavo Rendering

Often I get clients wanting to send me either a Revit model or a SketchUp model, and they assume the process can be fast-tracked with the 3D model being provided. Revit and SketchUp software are great for what they are, but for me, they both propose issues. The Revit model and the SketchUp have double faces and flipped normals, which are detrimental to me. Double faces are elements occupying the same space, like walls on top of walls; flipped normals are when the geometry points the wrong way. Rendering software tries to optimize and only sees the element toward the normal; when flipped, the software can’t see it correctly. So, if you draw a wall in Revit or Sketchup counterclockwise, the normals will face in when you need it facing out unless it is an interior wall. Revit and SketchUp don’t care, but rendering engines do.

Revit models have a ton of unneeded information, and the Revit model is often part 3D and part 2D (drafted with 2D lines), making it challenging to understand.

SketchUp has a low learning curve, so very little training is needed. However, minimal training means the model is usually sloppy. Again, for its purpose, SketchUp is great; for quick design intent models.

The Caccavo model came to me as a SketchUp model. Regarding this SketchUp model, it was modeled well. Still, it took me about a day to fix the flipped normals, delete the double geometry, and replace low-resolution geometry with high-resolution geometry. If I had started with a 2D drawing, it would have taken me about the same time.

What a great-looking house! I have said many times I love brick! White brick and black windows are my new favorite.

Amherst House Rendering

Brick is my favorite building material. I am from Chicago, and many structures are brick (Chicago Fire). When they tear down an old factory or something, those bricks are recycled and valuable for future construction. Brick means the structure will last forever. It takes a skilled blue-collar mason, the type of skills who built this country.

Bentley Pool House Rendering

Pools, what to say about pools? First, if you are going to have a pool, I hope they set you up with a nicely designed pool house like the Bentley Pool House.

I live in a resort community, with several pools, and you hardly see the pool being used. Personally, I haven’t used them. Growing up my parents installed a huge above ground pool, but nobody had the time to take care of it, so it didn’t last long. I guess pools are a luxury most people want, but once you have access to one, the novelty wears off.

What do you think? Pool or no pool?

2065-P Nick House Rendering

Great looking house! I love the stone, metal roof, and nearly everything about this home render. The brief was a Texas house, so I wanted to make it look a little like it was on a ranch.

123 N. ANITA Rendering

Here is a Compass rendering out of LA (Los Angeles). The home is almost done, but they wanted to get it listed before they could take photos. They wanted the house to look large, so I lowered the camera (photographer’s trick). The premise is you are looking higher than average, making the brain interpret what you are looking at as more significant than it is.

Old Gate Road Renderings

It is New Year’s Eve, and I am wrapping up a few pieces I wanted to share.

I am an architectural student dropout and have spent the past 30 years working in architecture as an architectural illustrator. I spent much of my free time doing street photography, mainly architecture. Here in San Diego, where I live, there are some great places like Balboa Park, which I go to often for architecture.

I am impressed with these homes; from proportions to scale, they are all excellent. Not your typical bland American architecture of the 21st Century. I have two more houses, one I will finish today. The final one, well, it’ll be done Monday.

Which home do you like best?

1602 Old Gate Lane Rendering

This home rendering is still going through the review process, but I thought I would share it early. I love this home design. Although the client commissioned me to do one view, I will do some vignettes when I get time. There are some neat features not shown in the view.

You do amazing work; thanks!
— Home owner

I have always wondered why I don’t see more of these projects. Projects where the client wants to see different color scenarios. Maybe cost, but what does it cost to repaint a house, are even worse, have to live with something that you don’t like?

Which one do you like better, the light or dark?

Ashville House Renderings

Good afternoon!

I have been wrapped up a couple of larger commercial project renderings, so I haven’t shared much lately. Not because I haven’t had smaller rendering projects to share but because I haven’t had time to share them. You know, life-work balance.

Here are the Ashville House Renderings. This is my wheelhouse and happy place. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy large, complicated rendering projects, and of course, I enjoy interior renderings, but small house exteriors are my happy place.

The 1479 Jade Oaks house rendering needed a big oak in the front yard

Another smaller house rendering to share with you. I enjoy projects that can start and complete in a day. Some projects span months and move slowly. The feedback can sometimes take weeks, so I have to schedule the time to make those changes. These small homes are fast and fun.

Harlan Lot 1 House Rendering

What a beautiful home!

A custom home project is one where you work directly with a homebuilder (and possibly your architect) to design, plan, and select every detail of the home's construction, layout, and finish. And when I say 'everything," I mean EVERYTHING.

The Interior is coming, and I'll share it when uploaded.

Stonebrooke Place Rendering

The American Bi-Level. My wife grew up in a similar house, and you see them all over the midwest. You enter onto a landing where you can either go up to the upper level or down to the lower level. I am unsure about the benefits of this floor plan; if you know the benefits, please let me know.

If you look, this rendering has a ton of detail, from the wood siding grain to the trim grain direction. I spent a lot of time adding elements that most other architectural illustrators don’t bother with. I can spend more time with detail than building the actual model.

860 Brook Hollow House Rendering

List your property months before the remodel is completed. This is how real estate companies are moving properties faster. After all, most borrow money and pay interest on that loan; if you can sell the property before you start, it is a win/win. Often, it also allows the home buyer to contribute to some of the material selections. For example, what would be a home becomes a semi-custom home.

House 4407 Rendering

For 18 years, I lived in a small upper Minnesota town called Breezy Point. In Breezy Point, there is a road called Airport Road, and you got it; there is a line of hangers for private airplanes, and one hanger looks very similar to the House 4407 Rendering.

White has been very popular over the past couple of years. I think probably half of my architectural renderings have been white. I guess it is timeless, so it works on most of the houses I render.

Pavey House Rendering

What a cute home, I like the stone with the wood; a great feel.

Often, like the Pavey rendering, I am provided CAD files and inspirational photos. I prefer a complete color board, with all the colors and materials vetted, but often, that is not the case. However, inspirational images for colors and materials work perfectly fine.

Glass Manufacturer Rendering

Yes, I do commercial high and mid-rise renderings. That is how I started professionally; high-rise luxury architectural renderings. I wish I could show some stuff from the early days, but 25 years ago, it wasn’t nearly as pretty as it is today. Not to minimize some of the work I see online today, but it is equivalent to what I did back then.

Here is a mid-rise rendering that I wanted to share. It was for a glass manufacturer; some animation was done as well. The company made transition glass for buildings, which is pretty cool if you as me.
